The Hoodoo Truth: Salt Is Salt

Certain people online would have people believe that only a certain type of salt should be used. Such information is incorrect. Among the most popularly mentioned salt is sea salt. Use of sea salt is very popular among the new-age crowd who often claim that it is the most powerful salt or that it is the only salt that should be used. Another similar claim is that kosher salt should only be used because it has supposedly been blessed by a rabbi. This is not true. Rabbis don't bless salt or any other kosher item. The term kosher only means that a food item is acceptable per the laws of the Torah.

So the truth is that salt is salt. Any type of salt can be used effectively. I make no distinction between the various types of salt available save for rock salt which I prefer in making mojos and some packets as it will not work it's way out or dissolve easily when the bag is fed.

  1. I agree with you salt is salt except for Black salt, now that's a horse of a different color. (no pun intended)

  2. Also: kosher salt is a misnomer; it's really kosherING salt. It's traditionally used for draining every last drop of blood from meat, rendering the MEAT kosher -- and the used, blood-soaked salt, very definitely NOT kosher.

So, kosher salt is really not anything special or 'blessed'; it's just regular old salt.
